At least 189,000 teachers applied to fill 25,288 vacant positions that had been announced by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) as those set to be promoted.

In an internal memo seen by our reporter, the TSC said that it had received more than 8 times of applications for the positions announced showing the massive scramble for career advancement among Kenyan teachers.

According to the Teachers’ employer, the positions that had been earmarked to be filled included 9,179 vacancies in post-primary schools and 16,109 in primary schools.

The TSC says that every teacher who applies to fill the position will be interviewed and that nobody will be left out without being interviewed and determining whether they can fill any of the advertised positions.

At the sub-county level, 96,640 primary school teachers have already been interviewed and are awaiting their results from the commission. “We urge them to be patient. All the interviews are being undertaken and we shall get back to them.”

For post-primary positions, 44,043 teachers in grades C3 to D2 will undergo interviews at the county level from January 27 to February 7, while 7,224 principals and teachers in grades D3 to D5 will face interviews at regional headquarters within the same period.

“There are three levels of interviews: Sub-county, where 96,640 teachers were shortlisted for the primary school vacancies; County level, where 44,043 teachers in C3 to D2 grades will be interviewed; and regional level, where principals and teachers in D3 to D5 grades will be interviewed,” reads the notice from TSC.

The TSC says that it is committed to ensuring that teachers get promotions from time to time to avoid career stagnation and to motivate them to deliver on their mandate.
