It was on a Friday, the day I typically reserve for sherehe, my celebration. However, on this particular Friday, my plans took a different turn; duty called. I had an appointment at Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL), the renowned maker of the smooth Hunter’s Choice Whiskey, now sporting a brand-new bottle while retaining the same great taste.
I had been planning to have the interview for weeks. It was taking place right in the heart of Tatu City, one of the fast-growing state-of-the-art cities in Kenya with lots of virgin opportunities yet to be explored. That is where the maker of Hunter’s Choice is located.
We were ushered into their spectacular bar named Savanna, a dazzling space adorned with lush green and vibrant yellow accents.
My mission was clear: I was there for Hunter’s Choice Whisky and nothing else. I had heard enchanting tales of the cocktails crafted by skilled mixologists, each creation a testament to the whiskey’s exceptional flavor. Jimmy, the mixologist of the day, was ready to showcase his artistry.
Up until then, my only experience with cocktails came from Paul, a bartender just a stone’s throw from my apartment. Paul’s idea of a cocktail involved handing me a thermos flask filled with hot water, four slices of lemon, and, of course, whisky. I would mix it myself, creating a concoction that, in hindsight, tasted more like a bitter tonic worthy of a Pemba witch doctor.
“The moment you taste a cocktail and feel the harshness of alcohol, that’s not a cocktail,” Jimmy explained, his voice brimming with the wisdom of a seasoned mixologist. “A true cocktail balances each component perfectly, harmonizing flavours into a heavenly blend with no hint of discord.”
Jimmy’s creation for me was a revelation: Hunters Choice Whisky, organic lime, sweeteners, and a touch of lemon fruit. The first sip was transformative, a symphony of flavors dancing on my palate. The whisky’s smooth warmth blended seamlessly with the zesty lime and the subtle sweetness, creating an experience that was nothing short of divine. This was no mere drink; it was a masterpiece in a glass, an alchemical blend that turned ordinary moments into something extraordinary.
“The power of a cocktail lies in its contents. One must know the exact contents as well as the occasion. Not every concoction is a cocktail. I love Hunter’s Choice because it is smooth and fits any occasion. I love referring to it as a party drink,” said Jimmy.
As I savored my cocktail in the vibrant ambiance of the Savanna Bar. With the exquisite taste of Hunter’s Choice Whiskey lingering on my tongue, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.
