The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially commenced the process of replacing more than 1,645 Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers who have successfully transitioned to permanent and pensionable teaching positions in secondary schools.

These teachers were part of the initial cohort of 20,000 JSS educators recruited on a one-year internship contract. They were posted to various institutions across the country in January, but have since secured permanent employment, necessitating their replacement in the JSS sector.

The transition process is being carried out systematically by TSC to ensure minimal disruption in learning at the affected JSS institutions.

Teachers whose internship contracts are being terminated will soon receive employment and posting letters to facilitate their new roles in secondary schools. This deployment is expected to commence from mid-March and extend through May 2025.

To ensure a smooth transition, the Commission has initiated a data collection exercise from junior secondary school sections to assess staffing gaps and determine the necessary interventions.

School heads, who also double as acting principals in JSS, have been directed to submit crucial staffing data in a standardized Excel template. The data to be submitted includes enrolment figures for Grades 7, 8, and 9, gender distribution, the number of teachers currently employed, their subject combinations, and gender composition.

This information will guide TSC in balancing out staff shortages, particularly in science subjects, which have posed a persistent challenge for schools across the country.

Following the completion of the employment process for the transitioning JSS teachers, TSC is set to release an advertisement for the replacement of the intern positions.

Unlike previous recruitment exercises where intern teachers were restricted from applying for permanent positions, this year, TSC made an exception, allowing them to apply and rewarding them with 50 bonus marks for their internship service.

This move was aimed at recognizing the contribution of interns and motivating them to continue in the teaching profession. In the ongoing replacements, TSC declared a total of 5,862 vacancies for primary school teachers, 21 positions for junior secondary school educators, and 2,824 slots for secondary school teachers.

The replacement positions, unlike the internships, will be on permanent and pensionable terms, providing teachers with greater job security and benefits.
