Both female and male teachers have had their maternity and paternity leave days increased respectively by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Female teachers will now have 120 days as maternity leave days from the initial 90 days. Male teachers, on the other hand, will have 21 days as paternity leave days from the initial 14 days. According to a statement issued by TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, the effecting of both paternity and maternity leave days are in line with the 2021 – 2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). “Female employees are entitled to 120 days maternity leave with full pay, from the previous 90 days while male employees are now entitled to 21 days from the earlier 14 days.”

The TSC has said the current paternity and maternity leaves are different from the annual leave that every teacher employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is entitled to. “The Code of Regulation for teachers (2015) read together with the CBA (2021-2025), have specific provisions for maternity, paternity, and pre-adoptive leave,” she said. In another interesting development that will see teachers smile, teachers employed by TSC and who adopt children will now enjoy a 45-day paid leave. This makes Kenyan teachers among those enjoying the most leave packages among all civil servants.

“A teacher is eligible to a pre-adoptive leave of 45 calendar days with full pay from the date of adoption,” said TSC chief executive Nancy Macharia in a circular to teachers. Other civil servants who adopt children have been pushing to have leave days but President Uhuru Kenyatta rejected the demands. Well, now teachers female teachers getting children and male teachers will have to enjoy this new provision.
