Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha on Monday, August 8, 2022, noted that students will only report back to school from midterm break if the environment is safe after the General Election.
CS Magoha was Speaking at Juja Farm, Kiambu County after commissioning CBC classrooms at Gathiru-ini Secondary School, Prof Magoha said that the initial Thursday, August 11, the date was subject to change depending on the outcome of the election.
“Assuming everything else is constant, the children should go back to school on Thursday, August 11. However, the date may change depending on the political environment.”
“For the love of our children, if we feel that they should stay home for one or two more days, we will then pronounce ourselves at that time. The public should not be worried at all because we will be on the watch,” he stated.
Cs Magoha saw it wise to effect the changes in term dates to restore order to the school calendar after the covid 19 pandemic disrupted this period hence interfering with studies across the country
The new term dates were officially agreed upon following the stakeholder engagement in order to cover the remaining two terms of the 2020 school calendar and stabilize the school calendar by December 2022.
With the national August 9th, 2022 general polls, also the ministry of Education has again effected new changes in the calendar. Under these changes, all schools were directed to close on 2nd August 2022 and were expected to resume back on 11th August 2022.
Now as the country is headed for the national polls on Tuesday 9th august 2022, all eyes are fixed on the end of the polls to pave way for the amicable resumption of learning activities as earlier scheduled.
“We hope the political environment will be peaceful after the elections so that schools may reopen from the midterm break as projected. Our children have been disrupted for a long by the pandemic and there is no need for further disruptions,” he added.
“Therefore, following further consultations, I hereby convey the Government’s decision on the immediate closure of all Basic Education institutions with effect from Tuesday, August 2, 2022, until Wednesday, August 10, 2022, to ensure that preparations and conduct of the upcoming elections are carried out seamlessly.”
“Schools and Parents are advised to ensure that learners from all Basic Education institutions proceed on their half-term break effective Tuesday, August 2, 2022, and resume on Thursday, August 11, 2022,” Magoha noted.
