Teachers employed under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will receive their final salary increments at the end of the month of July under the 2012017-2021 CBA. Teachers who have served for 3 years and above will be the first to benefit.
The teachers will be promoted to a new job group which attracts new salaries and allowances. According to the teachers’ employer, the promotion of teachers is already in the pipeline.
In the coming months, TSC is planning to promote C1 teachers to C2, C2 to C3, and C3 to C4. About 600 million shillings will be used to move 4,595 primary school teachers, currently in Job Group C1, to Job Group C2.
At the same time, another 400 million shillings will be used to promote 2,637 graduate teachers to Group C4 from Group C3. Over 175 million shillings will be used to promote 652 graduate teachers in Grade D3 to Grade D4.
13,713 principals, deputy principals, senior masters, secondary teachers, head teachers, and deputy head teachers in secondary and primary schools will also be promoted. The highest vacancies in this category are Deputy Head Teacher II for regular primary schools, which has 7,720 posts.
2,733 head teachers for regular primary schools, 1,330 secondary teachers, 1,725 deputy principal II, 602 principals for regular schools, 224 deputy principal III for secondary schools, and some 208 Senior Master II will be promoted under this new plan.
Overall, TSC will need at least 2.2 billion shillings from the National Treasury to promote the said teachers and sustain their new salaries.
“As we all know, promotion is not just about the title or Job Group. It is about the benefits that come with the promotion and we believe that with the funds, we shall be able to give the said teachers what they have been waiting for long,” said Nancy Macharia, the CEO of the Teachers Service Commission.
In the past few months, TSC has been racing against time to address the massive teacher shortage across the country that has threatened to paralyze learning in many public schools, especially after the rollout of the Junior Secondary Schools.
More than 30,000 teachers have since been employed and deployed by TSC to various schools across the country.
