Education Cabinet Secretary professor George Magoha earlier had revised school reopening dates from Thursday, August 11 to Monday, August 15, 2022.
According to his statement on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, Magoha said the new dates supersede the Ministry’s earlier communication on the reopening of Basic Education institutions.
CS Magoha said the changes had been effected to allow for the completion of ongoing ballot tallying.
As per Magoha’s statement, he said that they have been informed that the process of tallying ballots may still be ongoing on the aforementioned date.
Magoha apologized for the inconvenience occasioned by these changes and asks for your indulgence, as they work to ensure the safety and comfort of learners through this period.
Speaking on Thursday, August 18, Magoha noted that the national examinations – the Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Certificate for Primary Education (KCPE) will be administered as per the schedule in November
He added that the polls had only slightly disrupted the academic schedule, which did not support extending the school year
“Our children are extremely resilient. Quite a number of them had completed their syllabuses. They have enough time to revise and their safety is of importance,” Magoha explained

At the same time, School Calendar’s term two is set to be extended to compensate for the time lost by activities of the general elections.
According to Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KSSHA) National Chairperson Indimuli Kahi, the government will extend the second term to give KCSE and KCPE candidates enough time to cover the syllabus and prepare for their final examinations.
Mr. Indimuli said this in a brief interview with a local radio station on Wednesday 17 August. He disclosed that he had consulted the Principal Secretary of Basic Education Dr.Julius Jwan and they had agreed to convene a meeting with Education stakeholders in order to restructure the term and compensate for the time lost during the just-completed elections.
