The vibrant city of Nairobi is gearing up to welcome the Africa Climate Summit and Africa Climate Week, scheduled to take place from 4 to 6 September 2023. This significant event will convene African leaders in a collective effort to deliberate on their commitment to achieving global climate targets.
The Summit will center on delivering innovative solutions for green growth and climate finance that will benefit Africa and the broader global community.
The Parliamentarians Dialogue, convened at the initiative of the Kenyan Parliament, is a distinctive feature of the African Climate Summit. The event is organised in collaboration with the the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), the Climate Vulnerable Forum’s Global Parliamentary Group (CVF GPG), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Global Renewables Congress (GRC), the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). The Dialogue seeks to engage legislators from the African Parliamentarians Network for Climate Action, the Climate Vulnerable Forum and across the African continent, as pivotal contributors to the realization of global climate objectives. The theme, “Forging Parliamentary Pathways for Effective Climate Action,” underscores the critical role played by parliamentarians.
Prominent African parliamentarians, responsible for climate action in their respective parliaments, will converge on this platform to deliberate on their role in achieving the Summit’s goals. The Dialogue aims to provide these lawmakers with an opportunity to critically analyze, discuss, and enhance strategies for oversight. The event will outline pathways for implementation from a legislative standpoint. This approach ensures that commitments made during the Summit translate into tangible actions that move beyond mere rhetoric. The role of parliamentarians in overseeing effective climate action across the continent is of paramount importance. The commitments made during high-level meetings by the executive branch should be treated with utmost seriousness to ensure accountability and meaningful progress.
The agreements reached during the Summit are poised to influence the outcomes of the Accountability Summit at COP28. This side event, convened by the CVF GPG in partnership with organizations including IRENA, UNDRR, GCA, and GRC, underscores the role of parliamentarians as beacons of accountability in climate action.
