TSC Has Banned The Following Courses From Recruitment

Teaching is still one of the most preferred professions in Kenya. Despite the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of teachers without meaningful employment, thousands of students are still taking up teaching as a profession.

In pursuing teaching, knowing the kind of subjects to major in is very important. Some have ended up taking subject combinations that are useless when it comes to getting employed by the Teachers Service Commission.

Sadly, most universities, being in business, are still offering courses that are not recognized by TSC, disadvantaging millions of students.

TSC has so far banned the following courses from future recruitment:

  1. Natural Resources
  2. Meteorology
  3. Forestry
  4. Animal Husbandry
  5. Horticulture
  6. Farm Machinery
  7. Fisheries
  8. Anthropology
  9. Sociology
  10. Theology
  11. Journalism
  12. Kiswahihi and Communication
  13. Business Management
  14. Criminology
  15. Industrial Chemistry
  16. Biochemistry
  17. Hospitality and Tourism
  18. Foods, Nutrition, and Deities
  19. Microbiology
  20. Technology and Applied Biology

Initially, all these options were admissible by the Teachers Service Commission. Those who undertook them were employed to teach in various fields, especially in secondary schools and colleges. But not anymore. Check them out before starting the course.

Sadly, as mentioned, universities are still offering these courses without letting the students know that they are no longer needed by the TSC. So, do not expect your university to let you know that you are taking a useless course.

In terms of employment, the TSC has been doing some great work of late. So far, more than 36,000 teachers have been employed. The majority of them have been deployed to teach in Junior Secondary Schools. TSC is also planning to employ at least 18,000 teachers during this year.

Unfortunately, teachers who were employed under the TSC to teach in Junior Secondary Schools have not received their salaries for almost four months now. TSC had promised to sort all of them by the end of the month of May but many say they have not received any.
